Join us for the October Film Club featuring Twice Colonized, a documentary following renowned Inuit lawyer and activist Aaju Peter. A fierce protector of her ancestral lands in the Arctic, Aaju works to defend the human rights of Indigenous peoples and establish a permanent Indigenous forum at the European Union. At the same time, she embarks on a deeply personal journey to confront the lasting effects of colonization in her own life, as well as the unexpected passing of her son. View trailer.

IRIS Global Connect and European Studies invite you to a virtual educator film discussion with Aviaja Larsen and Lars Lerche, cultural workers at the Greenlandic House in Copenhagen, Denmark. Drawing on their experience and perspectives, our guest speakers will help contextualize the documentary and guide a conversation about Greenland’s colonial history, cultural resilience, Indigenous self-determination, and contemporary Arctic issues.

Participants are encouraged to watch Twice Colonized before the event, though advance viewing is not required. The film is available to stream free through PBS/POV and may also be available through Kanopy with a participating library or university account. (See trailer here)

This free online event is open to all and is especially designed for K–12 educators seeking resources and perspectives for teaching about Indigenous histories, colonialism, cultural resilience, and human rights, and self-determination.

This event is co-sponsored by European Studies at UW–Madison.
